Mr Antti Sarela, Project Leader, The Australian e-Health Research Centre, CSIRO
Antti Sarela is a Principal Research Scientist and Project Leader – Care Assessment Platform (CAP) Project in CSIRO, The Australian e-Health Research Centre. He holds M.Sc. (Tech.) degree in technical physics specialising in biophysics and medical technology. He has more than 15 years experience in medical device industry running several research and product development projects on physiological measurements and monitoring devices for home care, anaesthesia and critical care. He joined CSIRO in 2006 and his current interests relate to developing and evaluating ICT solutions for home-based health care models.
Professor Branko Celler, Director, TeleMedCare Pty Ltd
Professor Branko Celler is internationally recognized for his innovative research contributions in developing information and communications technologies for the management of chronic disease in the community. He is the Director of the Biomedical Systems Laboratory and the Laboratory of Health Telematics at the University of NSW. He was also Foundation Director of the Centre for Health Informatics at the University of NSW and is a Foundation Fellow of the Australian College of Health Informatics. Whilst maintaining his University role part time, Branko was the Foundation Director of TeleMedCare Pty Ltd, a company established to commercialise telehealth technology developed at the University of NSW. TeleMedCare is now recognized internationally as an innovator in telehealth and is rapidly developing international export markets for its products and services. Branko has published more than 150 papers in areas as varied as physiological control systems, bio-instrumentation, biomedical signal analysis, physiological modeling laboratory automation and medical informatics. Over the last ten years however he has focused his research on applications of information and communications technology (ICT) in health. He has received more than $12 million in competitive research funds over his career and continues to be an active researcher, with more than $6 million in research grants for the period 2003-2011 alone.
Dr Brenda Powell, Telehealth Project Officer, Department of Health WA
Brenda currently works as the Telehealth Project Officer for the Department of Health, WA, a role she has been enjoying for the past 18 months. Previously Brenda worked in medical research, both in Australia and overseas. Since joining the Telehealth team in Western Australia Brenda has been working to help develop both strategic and operational aspects required to drive forward Telehealth in WA. Much of her recent energy has been focused on the development and implementation of an online scheduling and booking system to be used for clinical videoconferences in WA.
Dr Brendan Lovelock, CISCO Health
Dr Brendan Lovelock leads Cisco’s Health business in Australia and New Zealand. Brendan has an extensive national and international background in technology commercialisation and management with experience across the health, consumer electronics and the telecommunications industries. Brendan has just recently joined Cisco after 4 years as CEO of the Health Informatics Society of Australia. He has particular interests in the application of communication technologies in health and the enabling of consumers to make more informed decisions on their health and wellbeing. He has been a major contributor to recent Australian e-health reports including "A Vision for an Australian Healthcare System Transformed by Health Informatics” and “A Review of the Australian Health Informatics Workforce”.
Dr David Dembo, Leader, Health and Human Services, Microsoft Australia
Dr David Dembo manages Microsoft’s Health and Human Services business in Australia. He is responsible for the company’s strategies and growth within this key focus market segment. Dr Dembo joined Microsoft in September 06 after six successful years at IBM where he was responsible for Business Development within Healthcare across Asia Pacific, in IBM’s Health & Life Sciences Business Unit. Prior to IBM, Dr Dembo spent three years working in the Pharmaceutical industry with Merck Sharp & Dohme, where he was responsible for development of CME programs and the coordination of a National General Practice Decision Support Trial. David received his degree in medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 1989. After five years in clinical practice working in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, and having established a chain of medical clinics David completed an MBA and MIM (Masters of International Management) from Bond University, receiving the university medal. David also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics from Monash University, Melbourne. And a Postgraduate Certificate in eCommerce from UNE.
Dr Leonard Goldschmidt, Medical Director, Telehealth & Medical Informatics Department of Veterans Affairs
Dr. Leonard Goldschmidt is the Medical Director for Telehealth and Medical Informatics at the Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in Palo Alto, California. He has been working to improve patient health care using information technology tools for more than 10 years. Among his projects that have improved care have been the use of remote video consultation for patients with spinal cord injury, home telehealth using personal messaging and other tools, patient health education portals, web portals for triage of selected clinical conditions, and teleretinal imaging for diabetic retinopathy screening. More than 400,000 diabetic patients have been imaged in remote primary and eye clinics in VA in the past three years.
Mr Peter Fleming, Chief Executive Officer, National E-Health Transition Authority
Peter Fleming joined NEHTA in October 2008 to lead the development of Australia’s national e-health agenda. Mr Fleming comes to NEHTA following a successful tenure as the General Manager Technology, Business Integration, for National Australia Bank. He is also past CIO of Colonial Group and Mayne Group Limited. He has extensive experience in large scale technology transformation and stakeholder management. At NEHTA he is focused on 2009 the year of delivery, bringing e-health implementations to fruition as a core initiative of health reform.
Dr Peter Tually, Director of Nuclear Medicine, ICT & Telemedicine, Imaging the South/Centric Health
Peter Tually is Director of Nuclear Medicine, ICT & Telemedicine at Imaging the South/Centric Health. Peter graduated in nuclear medicine science at the University of Sydney in 1992 and completed his intern period at Concord Repatriation Hospital and the Adventist Hospital, Sydney. He completed post graduate studies at the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital, Greenwich, London and returned in 1996 to Australia to work for Dr Johnny Walker to implement a nuclear telemedicine operation throughout the south-west W.A. region - the first dedicated regional and remote IT based nuclear imaging service of its type in Australia. Peter holds a masters degree in researching the methodologies for the evaluation of telemedicine in regional and rural communities and aims to extend nuclear imaging technology throughout other regional localities in Australia and Asia. He is the founding president of the Rural Alliance in Nuclear Scintigraphy which aims to provide support and continuing education programs to practitioners in rural nuclear medicine. Peter's PhD work relates to the relationships between cardiac biomarkers and telenuclear cardiology stress testing.
Dr Phil Gurney, Chief Executive Officer, Australian E-Health Research Centre, CSIRO
Phil Gurney has more than 15 years experience in commercial and R&D management. Dr. Gurney's career spans the e-health, biomedical, telecoms, IT, defence and consultancy sectors, with the common theme being identifying and obtaining the best outcomes from R&D projects. Prior to joining CSIRO in 2009, Dr.Gurney has held a number of senior positions in international organisations, including board roles with US and Australian organisations. He was a founder, and Managing Director, of VPIsystems, and oversaw the expansion of the company from Australia to US, Europe and Asia. He has worked with a range of organisations including DSTO, and has consulted on growth strategies for SMEs and not-for-profit organisations. Most recently prior to joining the AeHRC, Dr Gurney was leading an R&D program in pathology informatics with Leica Biosystems.
Mr Rajiv Ramaprasad, Managing Director, WorldCare Asia Private Limited
Since 1997, Mr. Rajiv Ramaprasad has been the Managing Director of WorldCare Asia Private Limited and its affiliates in the region and has continued to develop telemedicine opportunities and software services across other parts of Asia. As the Managing Director of the Malaysian affiliate, Mr. Ramaprasad continues to manage, on behalf of the Ministry of Health in Malaysia, the ongoing national teleconsultation network that has been operational since late 2002. In addition, as the CEO of WorldCare Korea, Mr. Ramaprasad successfully signed the first telemedicine services agreement of its kind in S.Korea with Ssangyong Fire and Marine Insurance Limited. From 2001 to 2006, Mr. Ramaprasad was also a member of the board of directors of KunWha Pharmaceuticals in S.Korea. Mr. Ramaprasad is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business Administration in Boston, USA.
Mr. Richard McFadden, Chief Information Officer, Department of Health WA
Richard McFadden commenced as the Chief Information Officer for the Department of Health in August 2008. He was employed by Telstra for 21 years, with a large majority of time spent with the information technology group as a technical specialist. The last 10 years Richard spent in banking and finance, as the Chief Finance Officer at Home Building Society. A major role for Richard as WA Health’s CIO will be continuing to lead and implement the complex eHealth WA program and other ICT and information management functions and reforms.
Dr Ricki Smith, Senior Executive, Silver Chain Nursing Association
Dr Ricki Smith is a senior Executive at Silver Chain Nursing Association, Western Australia’s largest health and community care organisation delivering nursing, personal care and home support to approximately 40,000 clients throughout the State each year. She is responsible for business development, assisting the organisation to leverage its significant expertise in clinical care delivery, technology, contact centre management and evidence based development of models of care.
Ms Sally Gosewinckel, Assistant Director, Medicare Benefits Branch, Department of Health & Ageing
Sally Gosewinckel works in Canberra in the federal Department of Health and Ageing as an assistant director in the team which lists and reviews Medicare specialist services. Sally joined the Department in 1991 as a graduate appointee and has also worked in the Victorian public service and private health sector. She grew up in Melbourne where she completed her registered nursing training at The Alfred Hospital prior to undertaking a degree in criminology and political psychology at The University of Melbourne. Sally re-joined the Department of Health and Ageing in 2004 after her most important six year role as full-time carer of her two boys.
Dr Victoria Wade, Medical Director, Vidco
Dr Victoria Wade is a general practitioner and a psychologist, who is currently Medical Director of a company developing and supplying telehealth services in collaboration with government, non-government and the private health sectors of South Australia. She is also undertaking a half time PhD on the uptake and sustainability of telehealth services in Australia at the University of Adelaide. Previously, Dr Wade was the CEO of SA Divisions of General Practice Inc, and the Director of the Primary Mental Health Care Australian Resource Centre.
